Certainly, the art of Eliana Minillo, a Brazilian artist of Italian origin, could be easily, and over abusively, identified as a new budding of abstract art. It must be said that a priori, her works present all her characteristics. Figuration as a menial copy of the real is totally foreign to her. Each one will see her concern to weld form and color within the same scheme, her desire of making you sing in the same voice to express your own vision of the universe.
A variety of supports and techniques reveals a virtuoso learned in playing with all the materials with disconcerting easiness. In addition to paintings and collages are her achievements in polychrome reliefs, a high point of her production, within which Eliana Minillo performs an accomplished composition of the three plastics arts, painting, sculpting and architecture. This eclectic genius artist wields her well-founded alphabet upon unlistening paints together with the elementary figures of geometry: rectangle, square, circle, and lozenge.
Eliana Minillo relives the history of modern art with gourmandise. Here, the space organized in function of the dynamic qualities of colors laid out in plain form recall the geometric abstraction of Auguste Herbin; there, behind the interlacing vegetable forms where mythical figures evolve, Wifredo Lam is hidden; and one might, as well, give back Hans Hartung his vast spaces of vibrant depth, which brought him notoriety. Like Bach doing Bach with Vivaldi, Eliana Minillo does Minillo with her illustrious predecessors; for the miracle is systematically reproduced: she “integrates it all” but you don’t see her, you don’t hear her!… For behind the clamor of references, save for the techniques and for the other “plastics cuisines” that, after all, do not quite interest us, the poetical space of the artist is revealed. Solely, this poesy confides in us. It is what so strongly moves us, what impresses us at first sight. It is what allows us to affirm that Eliana Minillo is not an abstract painter. Or not just so. Transcended, reality is quite present. The titles of the works, a summoning of multiple literary sources, attest to this reality poetized to the extreme. A poetical tale wrapped up in water and in fire, of “today” and of “yesterday”.
Eliana Minillo reveals her poetic quelling, full of profound solitude. The Urban Emptiness resonates from the end of all existence, like an echo to the Latin palindrome celebrated by situationist Guy Debord: In girum imus nocte et consumimur Igni. “We spin in circles at night and are consumed by fire”.
